Brief history of the site
“The small Neolithic village developed gradually at the start of the Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC).
It is an essential urban center in intra-Aegean transactions.
After a first volcanic eruption, the port city of the Middle Bronze Age emerges.
Thus, its maritime trade then extended far beyond the Aegean Sea: to the eastern Mediterranean.
In practice, the remains of impressive buildings with rich content and the city’s wastewater treatment system bear witness to its influence.
Then, shortly after the middle of the 17th century BC. AD (late Bronze Age), an earthquake destroyed the city again.
It is rebuilt with more impressive public and private buildings.
To the extent that the desire to promote their social status by decorating their homes with exquisite murals is indicative of the mentality of wealthy citizens.
We will not forget that this society was hit by another earthquake, just before the volcano erupted at the end of the 17th century BC. J.-C ..
The city’s burial under thick layers of pumice and volcanic ash has trapped society’s image forever. “
